It's the picture, stupid!

In the early nineties, when the Human Design System started to unfold in the world and its revelation was still relatively fresh and pristine in Ra’s mind, we were eagerly trying to coax from him how he managed to decipher the meaning of those cryptic charts. Quite often he would tell us that we shouldn’t be seduced and spend much or any time with all the numbers on that chart, but instead focus on the picture, the body graph, which shows most of the relevant mechanics going on in someone’s Design. It was the early Clinton years and James Carville’s campaign remark “It’s the economy, stupid” was still in everybody’s mind and so Ra paraphrased it for his own purposes, answering us with “It’s the picture, stupid, it’s all in the picture!”

My! How the times have changed! In a May 1997 class in Taos, Ra began to shift the emphasis away from the picture to the numbers with the introduction of “Resonance,” which was the groundwork for his “Profiles.” And nowadays, to our great sorrow, almost everybody who gets captivated by Human Design identifies with those numbers and the related labels and often has no idea what the picture actually shows.

That is a great pity and a great loss, because those numbers mostly serve to attach a set of labels to people, which is not really the same thing as discovering how they actually energetically function in real life. You also don’t need to know anything about the mechanics of Human Design: you just take those numbers and are then able to utter a great sounding judgment that’s supposed to describe that person, all without actually having to look at the chart. That’s a total waste of the true power of Human Design. Not only are the labels quite useless and often wrong, they apparently also seduce a lot of people to try to pretzel themselves to conform to them. Thus, a tool that has this great capacity to show you how you’re conditioning and how you’re conditioned has become a major conditioning factor itself.

Zen Human Design has been trying to let you know since many years that this is not what the Human Design System really is. By going back to the original, it is the only Human Design that’s truly helpful by focusing on the essential, simple mechanics of human life that are visible in the body graph. It engenders understanding and liberation instead of luring you into a wonderfully furnished trap. I urge you to take advantage of the presence of a Human Design teacher who truly understands.

Now that we’ve finally survived the apocalypse of December 21, 2012, we’re looking forward to what the next era brings and wish you a happy new year.

The New Calendar

One of the things I know for certain from creating Human Design ephemerides since almost twenty years is that the world usually doesn't end just because a calender ends. It's just that an eternal calendar easily becomes quite unwieldy and it's more practical to divide it up into smaller, more manageable pieces. And so the 2013 Pocket Ephemeris is the twentieth annual ephemeris I have made. 1994 was the first. For Human Designers who recognize the value of recognizing conditioning it has been an invaluable tool all these years. Join the club!
