Happy (New Year)I'm a couple of days early with my good wishes, but I will be on planes and on the road again on 31/1 and now is the best time. I needed to leave my beautiful Himalayan refuge a while ago for visa reasons and I decided to make a tropical eight-islands tour this time: Phuket, Phi Phi, Lanta, Mook and Lipe in Thailand, then Langkawi and Pinang in Malaysia and finally Bali in Indonesia. All of it was nice and beautiful, but Bali turned out to be an absolute standout: It’s the happiest place I’ve ever seen and been. After leisurely cruising around for three weeks in places with barely any tourists, in close contact with the locals, usually my preference, for my last week I ended up in Ubud, which is bustling with visitors from all over the world, despite the rainy season. I often sit in one of the many street cafes and just watch people, one of my favorite things to do. There are many vacationing couples, but I’m no longer very interested in the men. No matter where they are from, with the notable exception of the Balinese, the poor guys are mostly intent on exhibiting, defending, protecting and dominating their prizes (are you a threat? - no, forget it, I'm not competing), so I mostly enjoy the women, dirty old man that I am: the Muslim Indonesians from the other islands, swaddled from head to toe, mixing with the girls from China, ruffled miniskirts exposing the length of their impossibly white legs; the Germans, Dutch and Scandinavians emphasizing their breasts and cleavage; dour, serious Spaniards and French; frumpy Australians; Russians and Ukrainians, mostly hidden behind painted masks; exhibitionist yoga afficionados thinking their skin-tight shorties emphasizing their crotches are also appropriate for the street; a noticeable number of lonely Julia Roberts types in their midlife crises, looking for Eat-Pray-Love. Most have one thing in common: they are unhappy. If they are aware of their environment at all, they seem befuddled by the attitude of their Balinese hosts with their beautiful light brown skin and open faces, ready to burst into dazzling, genuine smiles at just the hint of a receptive, friendly attitude. As I’m sitting there and watch, if a westerner meets my eye, they quickly look away, as if embarrassed or ashamed to be seen, but the Balinese open up, linger and smile. Happiness recognizes happiness and shares. That’s real love. Yes, you’re with me, together we take part in this miracle of life and consciousness. When you look at the faces of the top cocks of this world, crowing on their manure piles, Trump, MusX, Xi, Putin, Khamenei, Bezos, et al, rich and powerful beyond imagination, do you see even a trace of happiness? What’s the point if you aren’t happy? You might as well go to Mars and leave this Earth in peace. Happiness isn’t achieved, it isn’t the result of strive and intent, it isn’t the result of getting what you want, of reaching a fictitious “destiny” or having a "purpose." It isn’t the result of your New Year’s resolutions, either – when have those ever worked out? It’s also not the result of thinking only happy thoughts, of ignoring the shadows and the ugliness - that’s just hypocrisy. Happiness is quite the opposite. It’s the acceptance of all there is, no matter your judgment, no matter your likes or dislikes. It’s the recognition and the trust that all there is must be the truth, must all come from the totality of everything, "God," whether you suffer from it or not. It's the result of an unreserved "yes" to everything life brings. Remember Buddha’s story: He was a prince, the heir to his father’s kingdom. He had everything he could possibly want, wealth, the best education, a beautiful wife, lovely kids, a supportive family, the admiration of an entire people. Yet he was unhappy. So he decided to leave it all behind and embarked on an impassioned search. He spent years practicing yoga, meditation, depriving himself of all the things he thought should be but weren't making him happy. He was radical, ruthless with himself, he suffered. Nothing did the trick. Finally, he gave up. He sat down in the shade of a bodhi tree, exhausted and hopeless. He accepted the cup of milk a farmer’s girl offered him, warm and fresh from the cow. And that’s when it happened. Enlightenment. Ultimate peace. Bliss. Eternal happiness. A few years ago I told a friend in a conversation something that startled her for a moment and she needed to write it down. Write it down for yourself, pin it to your fridge, take it into your heart, because I’m telling you, from the depth of my heart, that’s the “secret” of happiness: The only way to always get what you want is to always want what you get.
